Tell us a little bit about your background
My interests have always been firmly rooted in two different camps: video games and adventurous activities. Initially, I chose to follow my passion for adventure by studying for a BSc Hons in Outdoor Leadership at the University of Cumbria. After a few years working in the industry, it was time to explore my other passion and gain experience in the video games industry. I was lucky enough to bag a job in VR Video Game testing during the first national lockdown, following which I worked on a number of AAA titles for some well known companies - including Beat Saber.
When did you first become interested in virtual and augmented reality technology?
My lifelong ambition to find the perfect combination of video games and adventure was answered by my discovery of VR headsets. Suddenly, my wild dream felt one step closer to becoming a reality. After experiencing indoor skydiving via a VR simulation and exploring a number of other simulations and VR games, I was hooked. I purchased the original HTC Vive as soon as I could, excited to experience a whole new level of gaming and creativity.
When (and why) did you join the Virti team?
I joined the Virti team at the end of August 2021. I was incredibly excited and impressed by the product and the company’s goals. The chance to help implement the technology that had long enthralled me, and to enable people to benefit from it in all areas of life, was too good to pass up! The role itself promised to be a great opportunity - and it certainly has been so far. I’ve been able to develop a whole range of personal and professional skills, and I can’t wait to see what more we can accomplish with this incredible team.
Can you describe your role at Virti? What does a ‘typical’ day look like?
As QA Tester for Virti’s products, I work very closely with the engineering and product team. Together, we spend time aligning our goals for the product. A key focus for me is testing the functionality of the products and providing feedback on the flow of the UX. Then, I’ll identify and assist in resolving any issues that might have cropped up before the product release.
A typical day will start with morning catch-ups and tackling any of the quick wins we’ve identified within these. Then, the bulk of my day involves targeting specific products or areas of the platform and testing these thoroughly. I’ll focus on optimising the flow and use of the product, to provide clients with a smooth and well-executed experience.
What skills did you bring to the team, and what skills have you developed since joining?
My previous experience in Quality Assurance meant I was able to bring knowledge of QA processes and strategies to help optimise the QA flow at Virti. I also bring a keen attention to detail and vast experience in Virtual Reality - which helped me to provide valuable feedback.
I’ve been able to achieve huge professional development since joining Virti. Being part of such a driven team, I’ve never felt so at home and passionate about the work I’m doing. During our Virti Jam Week, I was able to develop skills in Automation Testing. I’m so excited to continue learning more.
What excites you about being part of Virti?
Every day presents a new lesson at Virti. There’s so much opportunity to learn from each other and our team really encourages each other to push further and further. No one here is working just to work; everyone is passionate, driven and developing with every piece of work they create.
What’s your proudest achievement (so far) as part of the Virti team?
As simple as they were, creating automated tests for checking the web application during the Jam week was something I was really keen to achieve. Being prepared for the steep learning curve involving new coding languages and systems (all of which I had minimal prior knowledge of) I was so proud when, by the end of the week, I had created the automated tests. I’m looking forward to developing this further and seeing what else I can create.
Looking ahead, what do you think the rest of the year holds for Virti? What are you particularly looking forward to?
What doesn’t the rest of the year hold for Virti?! I’m incredibly excited to get my hands on more products and updates to test as they come out. The technology and its uses are incredible and I’m looking forward to how we can adapt them, and facilitate their adoption, in so many more ways. I’m also looking forward to furthering my own professional development and learning more from my fantastic colleagues.

Outside of work, you can find me doing any number of things! From getting back into adventure activities to exploring new worlds in video games, or simply enjoying a nice pint at my local. I’ve got a few personal development challenges and fitness goals I’m aiming to achieve throughout 2022, but I’m sure I’ll also be squeezing in a movie night or two!
